Drifter boat

It all started with a boat...

Founded in early 2015, Drifter is a nautical-themed brewery based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Drifter's namesake is a 43-foot sailing yacht that founder and director Nick Bush's parents built in their garden during the late ‘70s. They then sailed around the world on Drifter for almost a decade before returning to Cape Town to settle down, have children and eventually sell the boat. Thirty-five years later, Drifter came into Nick’s life in March 2017 and is once again owned by the family and a few scallywag friends.

Drifter symbolizes adventure, creativity and community, which is what the team strive for in the beers and at the brewery. Whether it is sinking a batch of Belgian tripel beer on the ocean floor or adding peanut butter to a winter brew, Drifter is always looking ahead and pushing the boundaries to keep the craft beer industry exciting in South Africa.

When you walk into the brewery, it feels like you've stepped onto a ship setting sail for beer paradise. By day, Drifter is a brewing and manufacturing facility - producing your delicious beers. By night the space transforms into an inclusive event venue with views of Table Mountain from the bar and outside balcony. In November 2016, Drifter tripled its brewing capacity and then doubled again in 2018. The company is expanding rapidly and Drifter beers are now available nationwide across South Africa as well as in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, China, and the United Kingdom.
