Ni Hao China!

By Nick

I recently got back from a trip to China where my friend Sean and I went to inspect brewing equipment. Neither of us had been to China before and we were both blown away by the country. We started off in Beijing where we spent two days as tourists exploring the city and visiting the very impressive Great Wall. After a dinner of scorpions, we had the pleasure of tasting a wide-range of exceptional beers at Slow Boat Brewery.

Then it was business time. We took the famous Chinese bullet train to Jinan, the capital city of Shendong province. Traveling at speeds exceeding 300 km/h, Sean decided to choose the VIP meal on the train for lunch which consisted of some mystery delicious chicken beak.

Upon arrival in Jinan we were met by our lovely Chinese contacts, Robert and Ada who whisked us away from the train station in the crazy traffic. We spent the rest of that afternoon touring their factories and getting to know each other even with the intense language barrier. Over the next few days, during our many business lunches and dinners, we drank great beer and negotiated for our equipment purchase. The service and support our contacts in Jinan gave us was exceptional, and I would recommend their equipment for anyone starting a brewery (contact us for details).

Our final mission was to Shanghai where Sean and I were flying out of back to Cape Town. Shanghai was unlike any of the other places we visited in China. Lumo blue lights lit up the highways at night and skyscrapers surrounded us everywhere. One of our final highlights was visiting two brilliant breweries, Boxing Cat and Shanghai Brewery. The trip to China proved to be not only productive for Drifter, but also a fascinating place to be a tourist in.
